Welcome to the Self Directed Services blog - a resource centre maintained by ARC Cymru as members of the All Wales Community Living Network.
Our aim is to provide a forum for debate about all varieties of self directed services, as they affect providers of services for people with learning disabilities. If you have any questions about self directed services, or have a perspective on any of the articles or views posted here, please post a message and we will search for an answer through our provider networks in Wales and beyond.

On the 17th July Cartrefi Cymru on behalf of AWCLN organised a day entitled Self Directed Services - exploring aspirations and concerns.
You can see the programme for the day Self Directed Services – Agenda for the day
We wanted to have a real chance to meet people already involved in delivering, commissioning, brokering, or experiencing Self Directed Services. For me it was a really interesting day that was deeply inspiring and asked as many questions as it answered.
Here are the presentations we can circulate on the blog from the day.
Wrexham’s approach to SDS July 2008
Trusts R Us July 2008
Individual Service Funds Sam Smith
If you attended the day you can also get a presentation from Pam Cowe who is a family member whose children recieve self directed services. Please leave me a comment requesting the presentation and I will get it to you.
At the end of the day we produced put together some ideas that the network would produce as a statement for WAG about Self Directed Services.
You can find the flipchart notes here Notes taken from the end of the day
The WAG Network statement from the day will be circulated for consultation shortly.
The feedback from the event has been very interesting, this can be viewed here Feedback from the SDS Workshop 17th July 2008

Simeon Brody in his Community Care blog went to the apparently very popular CC personalised budgets conference recently. He quotes the government personalisation programme manager Martin Routledge who summed up personalisation as offering people “practical ways to live their lives rather than receive a service… moving social care away from the “us and them” mentality of workers and service users.Routledge apparently gave the warning that personal budgets were not a “silver bullet” for social care and should not “carry the weight of the challenges the social care system faces” such as funding and demographics.
